The twenties are known as a decade of excess. It was apparent in the rebellious nature of the youth as well as the rise in consumerism bolstered by the increased industrial activity. The twenties were a time of developing balance - women attained the vote but immigration was more restrictive; prohibition sought to restrict the negative outcomes of a drinking society while it encouraged the development of organized crime; and black pride became a rallying cry for the back to Africa movement while the Klu Klux Klan gained in popularity and power.
