Have you read Of Mice and Men? John Steinbeck wrote this short book. Do not read this essay unless you have read the book! This essay will be an anology of the theme on loneliness and alienation in the novel. This essay will start with the loneliness and alienation of the characters in Steinbecks novel. George and Lennie are the main characters in the novel. They are introduced as a pair and stay as a pair throughout the novel;therefor, this would suggest that there is no loneliness. George is brought in leading Lennie along a path this shows that George is the leader of the two. The first thing said is Lennie! and then Lennie for god sakes dont drink so much. This shows that George is bossing Lennie around. Another trait showing that George is the leader. In the opening of the novel it describes George and Lennie. The first man was quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features. Every part of him was defined small, strong hands, slender arms, a thin and bony nose. Behind him walked his opposite, a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, with wide, sloping shoulders; and he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little the way a bear drags his paws. His arms did not swing at his sides, but hung loosely. This describes them as total opposites, and that they are. As the story develops, it is shown that George is a man of two bodies as he, bosses, thinks for Lennie. George is lonely because he has know one to talk to, besides lennie who can not carry on an intelligent conversation. George is alienated aswell because he always helps Lennie, and well babysits Lennie. Lennie is lonely because George does not talk to him. He just yells and screams at him most of the time. Allways bossing him around....
