Independence, it’s defined in the dictionary as “not influenced, guided or determined by others”. This definition describes very few people, male or female who are alive today. At some point in every person’s life he or she became dependent on someone or something. It’s possible that there are different levels of independence that each of us hold. Men may have more independence than women, or women’s independence may be more inconspicuous. Men’s independence is reciprocal of women’s independence.All throughout history men have been the forefront of evolution. Men fought in wars dating back to the Roman empire and have lead the world politically to where it is today. The United States has never seen a woman president and it was only in the 1920’s that women were first permitted to vote for political offices. In recent decades men “ruling the earth” has been threatened by women who are now holding executive positions and political offices (Sargent 214) . As women become more independent men lose the superiority they once had. Women who are executives at companies have men who are working for them. Even today there is some level of discomfort for a man who has a women as a boss. Men are threatened by women’s shrinking dependence on them. Women are now in the front lines of battle alongside men fighting for their country as only men did years ago.How much independence does a person have? Independence is a state of being, not a tangible object. A person’s independence is directly related to his environment ( ). Not all men are equally independent, factors such as culture, race and class are also factors in determining freedom. Feminism is the theory that men and women should be equal politically, economically and socially (Gallop 39).
