1- Definition : Piercing is The process of perforating skin in which a needle or a gun is used to create a hole in the flesh then a jewelry can be inserted to hold the opening... 2- Types:There are basically two types of piercings. The first type is purely aesthetic. The sensations they provide are visual and psychological. Navel, eyebrow, ear and nose piercings fall into this category The second category (genitals and nipples) provides more sensual and physiological delights.3- Methods:1- Piercing guns: Piercing guns are commonly used to pierce the ear and nose. Guns using pre-sterilised studs and butterflies with protective disposable fittings are preferable as there is no direct contact of the gun with the client's skin. After every use, the gun must be wiped over with 70% alcohol, or another suitable disinfectant. Piercing guns must be used only as recommended by the manufacturer. 2-Catheter needle The catheter needle is a pre-sterilised needle in thin plastic tubing, used for piercing all areas of the body. The needle is passed through the skin and withdrawn leaving only the tube in place. A sterile stud or ring is then inserted into the tube and the tube withdrawn. Care should be taken to ensure minimal handling of the jewellery. A new sterile needle must be used for each client . Piercing methods involving direct contact with the client's skin are not recommended. 3- How is it done? The skin is pulled firm with a surgical clamp, and then, with a "needle and thread action," the opening is created with a large (12-16 gauge) hollow needle thrusted through the site, followed quickly by inserting the body jewelry to maintain the opening (Armstrong et al., 1994).
