Hoover Dam

Rivers are extremely important to The Hoover Dam generatesmore than 2,000 megawatts of electricity andprovides flood and irrigation control. The damstands 725 feet tall and lets close to 25 billiongallons of water a day through it. Over half ofthe area around the dam is dry but it is veryfertile. The dam is a good way to irrigate thesefertile dry lands and provides a goodwaterway to have activities on.The Hoover Dam is located on theColorado river in Nevada. The dam is so largethat if gigantic refrigerators in constructionhad not been used in the dam to cool it, theconcrete would not be dry to this day. Tourismis another huge factor in the dams area. withall the tours of the dam and all of thepublicity, there is a lot of small shops andtours. This money goes to maintenance of thedam and to build new things.The building of the dam startedaround 1925 and lasted many years. Peoplecame from all over the west for work. It was agood opportunity for work at that time.Boulder city is a town where the workers livedand built apartments to live in. They wouldalso develop “rag towns” which were smallvillages made up of dirty tents and poorpeople.
