Ivan Petrovich Pavlov, known for his inspiring experiments with his dogs in the psychology field, was a Russian born citizen on September 14, 1849. Known as Pavlov to most, studied at the University of Saint Petersburg as well, at the Military Medical Academy also in St. Petersburg. In 1884, Pavlov studied in Breslau, now known as Wroclow Poland, and Leipzig Germany until 1886. Before the start of the Russian Revolution, he began to serve as a director of the department of physiology at the Institute of Experimental Medicine and as a professor of medicine at the Military Medical Academy. Pavlov, an opposed citizen to communism still sought to study in lavatories built by the soviet government in 1935. It was here that he pronounced his famous experiments on his dogs. His first experiment involved a creation of an exterior pouch on the dogs’ stomach, where he studied the effects on nervous stimulation of gastric secretions. This led to the discovery of the conditioned reflex. This is where at the sound of a bell the dog would salivate, even at points when no food was present. This experiment explained that when the dog was going to be fed, it would experience a natural flow of saliva. Pavlov’s studies on his dogs led to the development of physiology-oriented theories of psychology during the early 20th century. With his extravagant surgery skills, Pavlov took his techniques and methods to treat mental illness. In 1904, Pavlov won the Nobel Prize in physiology for medicine for his outstanding interpretation of on the digestive glands. Not only a great historic figure in physiology as well psychology, Pavlov’s experiments and studies led to a great know how of scientific knowledge today. As a long-lived role model for some, Ivan Petrovich Pavlov died on February 27, 1936. ...
