This book opens with the main character Esther Greenwood, telling the story of how she should be having the time of her life. She has been chosen to be a guest editor for a ladies fashion magazine. This should make her happy but it does not. So, by the end of the first chapter I could see that something was wrong with her. The book goes on to tell of her trip to New York, and all the ordeals with the fashion magazine and such. One of these events is very interesting, while at a dinner Esther and the other girls are eating some crabmeat, and it turns out the meat is bad and they all get terribly ill. The story then continues and in chapter two we get to meet Esther’s supposed to be man. Buddy Willard, who eventually ends up in a tuberculoses clinic. Esther soon finds out that Buddy has slept with another woman, which angers and disappoints her. So, she tells Buddy they can not be married in chapter eight. While having her picture taken she breaks down and starts crying, this is about the point I realized that she is really bad off. She had not slept in seven days, so she gets her sleeping pills refilled. While doing this she is referred to see Dr. Gordon, who suggests electroshock therapy. When she describes the therapy I was shocked, well its almost too hard to explain what I felt. After this she decides to never see Dr. Gordon again. Now, she is really thinking about attempting suicide she states that, she has nineteen razor blades ready to slice her wrists. She tries but only cuts her leg. At the end of chapter thirteen is when she decides to take her own life. She goes in her basement, hides in a little area and takes pills one by one until they are all gone. She is admitted to Caplan hospital where she gets a women doctor, which helps with her recovery a lot. So, she stays in this hospital for some time and eventually does make a recovery....
