Jerry PowellHealth EducationDate: November 1, 2000,Title: High fiber diet improves Type 2 diabetes control, Source: NUTRITION GLYCEMIC index, Sep2000, Vol. 355 Issue 9217, p1794, 15p, Author(s): Allen, PamIn this abstract I will be talking about priority health-risk behaviors, such as late-onset of diabetes, a present study shows that a high fiber diet improves type II diabetes, the late- onset stage. The cause for the late- onset of this diabetes is do to over weight. This means patients or people with type II or late- onset diabetes need a diet rich in natural high- fiber foods which offer a better control for glucose production. In the ADA diet this diet of saturated fat is replaced with mono saturated fat, since this approach is thought to be the basis for a the healthy effects of Mediterranean diets. Manisha Chandalia and colleagues amid to find out whether glycaemic control could be improved simply my increasing the natural fiber content of the diet so they conducted a experiment on elderly people for 6 weeks.Thirteen patients with type 2 diabetes randomly assigned the ADA diet (containing 24-g fiber/day) or a high fiber diet (50-g fiber/day) for 6 weeks. Patients also followed an isocaloric diet for 7 days, then switched to the alternative diet for 6 more weeks. When patients followed the high fiber diet, the mean daily glucose concentrations were 0.7 mmol/l lower and the urinary glucose was 1.3 g lower than patients who followed the ADA diet. The high- fiber diet was associated with decrease in 24-h plasma and insulin concentrations. The type II diabetes is mostly associated with weight problems and is rarely corrected in time. People who are over weight usually don’t realize there is a problem until years down the road, when weight starts to build, thirst, and frequent urination starts to become notice able an they start to wond...
