freewill

Would you say that the word “freewill” is a synonym for the word “freedom? " Well, freewill is a synonym of freedom. In fact, because they are synonyms of one another, their definitions are generally similar. Freedom can be defined as a state in which somebody is capable to act and live as he or she chooses, without being subject to any, or to any undue, restraints and restrictions, while freewill can be defined as doing something willingly rather than by compulsion (Encarta). In the story The Leader of the People, by John Steinbeck, Jody’s grandfather always wanted to share his stories about his old encounters with Indians. Jody’s grandfather told his stories when and where he wanted. Jody’s grandfather told his stories at his own freewill. In Jody’s case, he could not do something when he wanted or where he wanted. For example, when Jody wanted to kill all the mice under the old haystack he was interrupted when a ranch worker warned him that he should get permission from his father. Therefore, Jody could not act under his freewill.In the story The Catbird Seed, by James Thurber, Mr. Martin was forced to take deceitful measures to defend his freewill. Ms. Borrows, a new supervisor, desired to reorganize Mr. Martin’s floor the way she wanted and not how Mr. Martin wanted despite the fact that he has been employed at his company for years and years. Mr. Martin devised a plan to rid his floor of Ms. Borrows. After his plan was executed, Ms. Borrows services were terminated.In the story The Drinker, by Sherwood Anderson, Tom Foster changed whenever he became intoxicated. At one point in the story, Tom believed that he felt no shame whenever his was under the influence. While intoxicated, Tom committed a crime when he stole money from a local store.
