She, like many others, loved a life to which she could not live and when attempted to test fate, failed.It is a common mistake for one to live above their means in today’s world. Buying the car that costs twice as much as one makes in a year, taking the trip that will leave one’s bills unpaid upon return, or living in a house that neither of its inhabitants can support without the combination of virtually all assets. Aspiring to live the lifestyles of the rich and famous, when one is truly born to middle class, is the start of the biggest crime one can commit against oneself. For in time, one is sure to fail. This mentality is very prevalent in today’s world and in “The Necklace”. Guy de Maupassant cynically tries to show the reader that the simple act of losing a necklace can pull one back to harsh reality. In modern society, this behavior can cost a house to be foreclosed or a car to be repossessed, not because of such trivial things as a necklace being lost, but rather divorce or the loss of employment....
