survival

In "Survival", Atwood tells us that the roles in Canadian literature are usually victims. She also outlines four different victims in the article. Among them, position one which is to deny the fact that you are a victim exactly fit the reaction to failure of Christine in the article "The man from mars." The theme of the article talk about culture misunderstanding between a east man and Christine. After sometime trying to know each others' culture, both of them are hurt by the culture misunderstanding finally. But Christine refuse to admit that she is a victim, and also pretend that she doesn't care it and the end is exactly what she want. All of those behavior are described in the definition of victim one that "They uses up a lot of energy, as you must spend much time explaining away the obvious, suppressing anger, and pretending that certain visible facts do not exist" by Atwood. She uses the way that describes her experience as an amusing story to cover her wound and shows people that she doesn't care what had happened. One of the reason that I think to cause her behavior is that she think her wound is better than the mans', so she refuse to show people that she also is affected by the affair. This is also another character in the definition that " They are afraid to recognize they victims for fear of losing the privilege they possess." The means she uses is that she doesn't reply any message to the man and try to escape from the memory of the experience. This is also the basic game described by Awoot that is " Deny your Victim-experience."So from the above analysis, we can clearly see that Christine is the first type of victim who deny the fact that she is a victim....
