"Free speech is one of the great foundations, on which our democracy rests," stated Susan Brown Miller in her article; "Let's Put Pornography Back in the Closet." This article focuses in on the aspects of pornography, from a womans perspective, and how society has dealt with them. Although we see many cases of violent and indecent pornography in today's society, the government should not be able to restrict free speech for any reason, including the degrading use of pornography.There are many points addressed in this article. Being the most highly talked about point in the article would have to be the degrading of women, and children through the use of pornography. When women or children or even men-no matter how artful- are shown tortured or terrorized in the service of sex, that's obscene. This disgusting picture being portrayed, can not be in anyone's eyes a form of art. This in a way is called a misuse of the guarantees of free speech and free press. Bok's theory states that, "although something is protected by law it is not always, "right, proper, or civil." True, being that pornography is an uncivil thing. But, there is no possible way that our government can ban it. Banning pornography would only lead to other forms of free speech being banned. Soon the whole world would not beable to speak their mind freely because; no form of speech would be tolerable. Altogether Bronwmiller's article makes a strong case against the pornography industry. Although we may say that something is constitutionalized, it may not always be right, proper, or civil. ...
