Most of the readers get engaged with the story due to the fact that in a moment in their lives they have been found in the same situation. McKnight using emotions, is trying to built up the kind of suspense that is found in movies nowadays in a short story, and he has achieved his goal very well considering the fact that the story was written in 1944.The author is using a developing style for the girl's husband in the story and that gets the reader anxious to find out what the ending would be like. The author uses mystery that surrounds the husband through the letters that appears to be receiving from an unknown sender.After the use of letters and the moody act of the husband we can see the protagonist of the story, the girl, how desperately she is asking for the presence of her husband. Here the use of dramatic irony as the girl thought that the road would be flooded so her husband wouldn't be home for the night, but instead the road is clear and so he finally does get home. However the girl was expecting him in order for her to be secure. What happens however is exactly the opposite. In this way MacKnight is achieving to built the kind of suspense that we are always looking for in a scary movie or story. The story is being told through the method of third person limited and so this way the emotions are being told indirectly. Such story needs to pose these qualities since we need to be in the protagonist's eyes and feel what she feels. In addition the author, using third person limited sees things from another scope as we get a picture of the surroundings.The readers curiosity is combined with anxiety as of what will happen in the story and especially tot girl. The psychological factor also plays an important factor here as most of the reader found himself/herself in the position of the girl so the author achieves to trap the reader in positioning his/her position in the one of the protagonist....
