The Doctor in spite of himself The Arkansas State university theatre presented The Doctor in spite of himself April 27, 2000 production drew a large crowd. It was performed very well; I laughed throughout the play. I would again like to give credit were credit is due. I felt the actors did a magnificent job of portraying their characters. They were believable and effective. The actors really lead me to believe that the lifestyle they were portraying was their own. What I mean by this is, they were playing the roles like it was really their lifestyle I thought the play had a natural instinct from the actors.Next, I would again like to congratulate Mr. Barry Phifer and his crew. They did an excellent job of designing a set that allows people to experience what it was like to in the play. The prop crew did an excellent job of designing the stage. I really enjoyed how it was all white and the colors of the actors clothes were bright and colorful. I thought it was nice. I could not catch the theme of the play because it did not jump right out at me. There was really only one thing that I thought was pointless was, when everybody was on the stage at one time but no one but two or three people spoke at one time while the rest of the actors were in the background standing like statues. I did not get that part throughout the play.The first scene stared with an argument between Sganarelle and Martine. Sganarelle and Martine are married. I could not figure out why they were fighting but it was funny. They were hitting and kicking each other and I thought that was funny. Then the neighbor came to calm everything down and Martine hit her. After the violence was over Sganarelle left to go chop wood. That scene was hilarious. My favorite scene was when Sganarelle went to Gerontes house and meet Lucass wife. He was touching her breast and telling Geronte he had to sample the milk and Lucas was getting mad because Sganarelle was touching his wife. Th...
