After watching the different scenes of Act 5 Scene 5 on video, the two scenes that come to my mind are Gibson (1990) and Branagh (1996) which were my favorites. The following paragraphs will compare and contrast the two scenes.I really liked the Gibson version of the scene 5 because it was emotional. The ghost of Hamlet showed emotions like he seemed vulnerable, his voice was choppy, and he looked scared. Instead of demanding revenge, he asks Hamlet to take revenge on his uncle. He is not wearing any armor in this version. It’s just a robe he has on and it takes place on the roof of the castle. The ghost was not shown as a spirit or a voice but in human being form. It made it look more real and the emotions were expressed thoroughly. Hamlet is shown very sad here and he listens to the ghost quietly while the ghost of King Hamlet talks. He is deeply hurt by what the ghost has to tell him. The scenes takes place at night of course and it was dark . Hamlet and the ghost were face to face while talking.The Branagh version takes place outside of the castle. The ghost is portrayed ugly and scary. He seems very dominating and demanding. He grabs Hamlet by the neck and throws him to get his attention. There is fog on the ground. Music is in the back ground and the ghost is shown in details. There is better lighting and technology used in this version. It is the most recent version. In this scene they go in details when they show the death of King Hamlet. They show the face of Claudius and exactly how he killed his brother. In the Gibson scene this wasn’t shown. Hamlet seems vulnerable and week in this version. He is disheartened to hear what the ghost tell him. The ghost demands revenge here instead of asking like in the Gibson version. The ghost was portrayed higher and more dominant. Hamlet had to look up to talk to him.I believe these both versions were effective in portraying the ghost and Hamlet.Both were somewhat alike yet...
