In today’s world many people strive for power among themselves and others. Fidel Castro is a leader known for his poverty stricken dictatorship. Many dictators like Castro go great lengths to get strength and power in the expense of others. People lives are greatly affected by Castro today because he does not care about the people’s needs. Without citizens supporting the government, the government cannot be strong. Cuba is a country where people live in poverty, bad education and lack of freedom. The people have an important role in their government. In order to stress the importance of people’s role in a government, and a lack thereof in a dictatorship, Dr. Seuss used Yertle the Turtle, the king of the pond on the Island of Sala-ma-Sond, to show how important each individual turtle was to the success of Yertle. When Yertle wanted to be the King of everything he saw, he used other turtles to make him taller, and therefore more powerful. If a turtle that was used to help Yertle’s success would break the ladder made out of other turtles, they would all fall and therefore drop Yertle to the ground and ruin the amount of things that he ruled. In both cases of Yertle the turtle and Fidel Castro, they work against the needs of the people and consequently develop a result of poor and insignificant dictatorship. In a country like the United States, where freedom is ubiquitous, the head of the government rules over a powerful and important country. If the needs of the people are met, then governments can be more productive and influential.The people’s needs are very important in governmental issues. Yertle had his own government. Mack, just an ordinary turtle, helped support Yertle by lying at the bottom of Yertle’s reign. He cried for food and needs, but Yertle did not care.
