In 1867 Alexander Bellinvented the telephone and the following year he and Watson organized Bell TelephoneCompany. In 1885 American Telephone and Telegraph organized AT&T. Otherinventions include: the typewriter in 1878, the cash register in 1879, and the linotype(press) in 1886. Even with all these new inventions it was not only inventors who had agreat impact on industry after the Civil War. In the 1870s the Bessemer Process, the process of blowing cold air over moltensteel to strengthen it, enabled Andrew Carnegie to increase the production of steel as wellas, become one of the first robber barons. J. P. Morgan owned the largest banking firm inAmerica and bought Carnegie Steel from Andrew Carnegie which was developed intoU.S. Steel in 1901. U.S. Steel became the first million dollar company in the U.S.. JohnD. Rockefeller was also a very successful robber baron, his fortune was made from oil. Standard Oil controlled 90% to 95% of U.S. oil at its high point. Also in the 1870sCornelius Vanderbuilt was a power to be reckoned with. He was the corporate powerbehind the countries railroads.
