A Worn Path is a story of determination and true strength of a grandmother through her journey to her grandsons salvation. The title itself explores a cyclical path that each of us encounters in our lives and will continue to do so in the future. The Worn Path begins and ends throughout the course of Phoenix Jacksons journey. In the story "A Worn Path" by Eudora Welty, an old woman whose human spirit is full of devotion, dignity and high drive overcomes tremendous impediments of life in the name of love for her grandson.Phoenixs feebleness is evident through a description given portraying her as an elderly worn out woman whose hindered walk resembled pendulum of a grandfathers clock. Her weaknesses and frail characteristics were plainly an impediment on her long journey. Obstacles followed her with every step, generating a nuisance for her along the way to her destination. Despite these physical ailments, Phoenix faces her senile state of mind, leaving her with a trail of delusions of fear. Yet, the resilience that Phoenix exhibits urges her to move past the hallucinations invading her mind.Phoenixs state of mind comes to a halt upon her encounter with the young hunter. He is her opposite in every way. The hunter is a young, white male whose exuberance for the thrill of hunting and the chase of life makes him arrogant. He comes to her rescue with a thrust which Welty describes as he lifted her up, gave her a swing in the air, and set her down, as if flaunting his superior strength. The bigger picture on this scenario shows the discriminatory relationship between the hunter and Phoenix. She is an elderly woman who has years of life experience behind her, while he is a young lad. Despite this fact, Phoenix refers to him in a formal manner as Sir, while he refers to her as Granny.
