As I stepped out of my car in downtown Austin I heard the sounds of a crowd and loud music. My destination was Stubb’s on Red River and 7th Street. On this night of October 25, 2000, Stubb’s was host to the Word of Mouth Tour. The tour featured some of my favorite hip-hop acts: the World Famous Beat Junkies, Dilated Peoples, and Jurassic 5.I arrived at the venue around 9:30. Disappointment set in as I realized that this was an all-ages show and it had started at 8:00 p.m. I ended up missing the Dilated Peoples performance, which was the act that I had most wanted to see.Stubb’s features a gorgeous outdoor stage. I walked in to hear the sounds of DJ Shortcut of the Beat Junkies. There were good vibes all around and the crowd was very excited. Approaching the stage I smelled the sweet aroma of marijuana all around.Shortcut was joined on-stage by Cut Chemist. They performed for about an hour and did a great job of hyping the crowd. These two showed much talent on the turntables. This led into a stellar performance by Jurassic 5.J5 performed for an hour and a half. They were full of energy throughout the set and did not disappoint. As they continued through the night, they were joined by Dilated Peoples and MC Supernatural. By the end of the show I was feeling irie and had just witnessed one of the best live performances I had ever seen. Most of the performers joined in at the after-party held at the Mercury on 6th St for a wonderful conclusion to one of the best nights I’ve ever had....
