Difficulty Log #3: Kincaid and what a great part the invention of the wristwatch played in it, for there was nothing noble-minded men could not do when they discovered they could slap time on their wrists just like that (that was the last straw; for not only did we suffer the unspeakableness of slavery, but the satisfaction to be had from We made you bastards rich is taken away, too) (10) I didnt understand what the invention of the wristwatch had to do with the point, I think, Kincaid was trying to makethe point that Europeans and North America took what they wanted from Antigua and its people (namely their freedom), thus making them very rich. I think that what she is trying to say, however, is how outrageous the circumstances are. Yet, I failed to distinguish how the invention of the wristwatch augments the grievance she is recounting. This may have to do with Kincaids writing style in particular book. She is often in you r face about what her feeling are, but expresses them in a passive, sarcastic way. There is often a hidden meaning in what she is saying. This, I feel, is one of those times. Perhaps she could have made the involvement of the wristwatch a little more apparent to the reader. She could have done this by assuming her audience is dense, and offering additional insight, in relation to the wristwatch. Maybe a phrase or two of embellishment would have made this passage clearer for me....
